Copenhagen, Denmark
This morning we got up early, ate breakfast and got assigned the first walking tour of Copenhagen. Again, I love early because things are not crowded and it is just more peaceful. And then it happened. The guide for our tour was absolutely the worst ever. We have not ever had a bad guide, on this cruise or the Rhine river cruise. All have had expert credentials and were top notch. I think I could have given a better tour than this guy. He was slow and monotone and just plain dumb. At one point he was making a comment about a statue and he said I don’t know what it is made of, I guess some artificial stuff.
One more issue was the handicap lady that did not have a mobility devices. I can appreciate a messed up body part or two but if the tour says you should be able to walk for 2.5 hours, common courtesy says hire a bus or get a wheel chair or some other means to cart you around. She just slowly shuffle along while we waited. She has done this to all tours, even Russia with stairs everywhere. This is the first time she was in my group though. Seven groups passed us and we had barely started. Add a really bad tour guide in the mix and needless to say, Woody and I bailed on this group. We walked to the palace, and a few other places then toured the city on a Hop On/Off bus.
Items of interest:
1. Ascension day - Shops were closed and people were EVERYWHERE in the city. I asked the Viking rep at the shuttle stop what was going on. She said it is a holiday because this was the day Jesus went to heaven. Woody said “are you sure about that”. She said YES. Who knew, I had to look it up.
2. German holiday - In contrast to the Danish holiday, our German train handler was very excited about today. I think he called it harvest day where all the men drink beer from sun up to sun down. He said it is very good day.
3. Soccer (or hockey)- Fans were everywhere. The yellow team had a giant crazy crowd. They even set off some firework kind of thing that spewed yellow smoke in the air.
4. Beauty - Just everybody I saw today, both male and female were beautiful (with the exception of the cruise passengers). The majority ride bikes everywhere and look like they just stepped out of a page of a fashion magazine, even the kids.
5. Little Mermaid vandals - this poor sweet statue has been decapitated three times, arm sawed off and painted several time. That’s some sick stuff.
That’s about it for Copenhagen. I’m excited because tomorrow we go back to a quaint village. I love those little towns.
Good night!
