Glacier Bay

Today was a laid back lazy day.  We cruised thru Glacier Bay till about 3pm.  There was a park ranger giving a talk in the public area but we opted to cruise in silence.  We watched the amazing view from our balcony.  It is the back of the ship.

Jane bundled up and took a nap off and on while I snapped multiple pictures of mostly the same view.  It was so beautiful I couldn't stop.

There were otters swimming along the ship too.  We saw big chunks of icebergs with birds resting on it....not photoshopped (Beth).  The lady that was speaking said there were mountain goats but they were just white specks.

The glaciers were so beautiful.  We actually saw a piece break off and fall in the water.  As Art the Ketchikan tour guide says...pretty neat huh.

This afternoon, we went to an enrichment program, which was a mistake.  Nick Jans, an author and photographer who lives close to Mendenhall glacier, told the story of a beautiful black wolf who stayed in the area and was friendly to the local dogs and people.  Nobody fed him, he was just a friendly wolf.  His name was Romeo because he favored the author's female lab. He reminded me of a black Otto.  They both weigh 125 lbs and are playful like a puppy.

The story ended tragic.  Some poachers from Pennsylvania killed Romeo. That's the part of the story that was not fun, of course.

They made a memorial for him at the Mendenhall glacier visitor center and the guy has written two books. He took some amazing pictures of this wolf in six years.  It was tragic but really a unique story.

So now we are enriched but sad.  Time to go back to our room and recover.  Oh well, tomorrow is another day to regroup.

Good night.
