Finally, we are in Alaska!!
The Griffith family sponsored our sightseeing today. We had a private tour of Ketchikan and tickets to the lumberjack show.
Our guide, Art, was a really sweet native who talked nonstop in about growing up in Alaska. His home was a three hour ferry ride and one hour car ride from here but he still visits a lot.
First we watched a bear hunting at a creek. Now that was pretty exciting. The bear was hunting salmon. He said the eagles that were there were scavengers, waiting for the leftovers.
Art showed us the wild berries, native plants that are used for medicine and a lot of talk about fishing, mostly salmon. We even went to the creek to look at the salmon ladder and actually saw some huge ones in the water.
We also heard about totem poles. We went to a park where they used to be carved by a talented lady until she had a dispute with the park. He thinks she will be back carving again soon.
Anyway, a lovely nature tour with Art. He showed us all the highlights of Ketchikan.
After he dropped us off, we did a little shopping and then headed to the lumberjack show. We went to one in Vancouver but it was nothing compared to this. It was a huge energetic crowd and the lumberjacks were strong and cute. A very fun show!
Oh, one more thing about Art. Everything he talked about, he ended saying pretty neat huh! He said that all morning. We agreed every time.☺
Now we are sailing away to Juneau. Tonight we are going to the ventriloquist show. That should be fun.
One more note. The weather has still been perfect. Just the right amount of chill in the air. I love it!
